One of the five most popular Phra Pidta amulets, the large-format Phra Pidta amulet with a patterned back is extremely rare. Compared to the Phra Pidta amulet of Luang Pu Khai, it's even easier to find. Those who possess one are extremely protective of it, cherishing it as their last remaining amulet. Phra Pidta amulets of Luang Pu Khai are very rare, with few knowledgeable individuals, and little information available. I've been meaning to write this article for a long time, but the one I'm going to highlight isn't the most beautiful, so I haven't had the energy to write a review. Now that I've acquired a champion Phra Pidta amulet of Luang Pu Khai, I'm motivated to write this article and explain how to identify it. Various textbooks only tell me to look at the left elbow, which should hang lower than the right. There are no other details. Today, I'm going to reveal everything, so that members can gain a little more knowledge.
A Brief History of Wat Cheing Len, now known as Wat Bophit Phimuk Chakkrawat, Bangkok, is an ancient temple dating back to the Ayutthaya period. It was later reestablished by the "Krom Phra Ratchawang Bowon Sathan Phimuk" (Royal Palace of the Front). Later, during the reign of King Rama III, he graciously restored Luang Pu Khai, one of the five great teachers of the Eastern region. He was a disciple of Luang Pu Chin of Wat Tha Lad Nuea in Chachoengsao Province. Luang Pu Khai created the same Phra Pidta amulets as his master, but Luang Pu Khai's Phra Pidta amulets became famous in Bangkok and the central region. Luang Pu Khai was born in Paet Riw on June 7, 1857, at Ban Pratunam Tha Khai, Mueang District, Chachoengsao Province. When he was old enough to be ordained, he was ordained as a monk and studied the Dhamma and Vinaya for a while. He then became a disciple of Luang Pu Chin at Wat Tha Lad Nuea in Chachoengsao Province. This was because Luang Pu Khai was fond of occultism. When he came to live with Luang Pu Chin, who was an expert in and renowned for his magical knowledge, Luang Pu Khai diligently studied and acquired knowledge until he became an expert. Later, he bid farewell to his master and went on a pilgrimage into the forests and mountains, seeking further magical knowledge. In 1902, he headed for the capital. He resided at Wat Cheng Len for only seven or eight years. Luang Pu Khai's kuti was thronged with devotees. By 1917, Luang Pu Khai's amulets had begun to appear, but not in large numbers. He held to the principle of "making new ones when they're gone."
Luang Pu Khai created Phra Pidta amulets made from powder mixed with lacquer. The material was dark yellow or brown, and they were often lacquered and gilded, or even coated with lacquer or resin. Their sacred powers focused on metta mahaniyom, evading danger, and invulnerability, similar to those of Luang Pho Kaew of Wat Khrueawan.
Luang Pu Khai created very few Phra Pidta amulets, divided into three sizes based on the amulet's body, not including the sides: large, medium, and small. However, in the amulet community, they were not often referred to by size, as some amulets were very small, but had large wings. Therefore, they were collectively known as Luang Pu Khai Phra Pidta amulets. However, the large-sized Phra Pidta Luang Pu Khai amulet can be distinguished by its size: the amulet measures approximately 2.3-2.4 cm in size and 1.5-1.6 cm in width. A significant flaw in the large-sized amulet is a lump of excess material beneath the left elbow, which is absent in the medium and small amulets. The craftsmen who carved the amulet molds retained their distinctive characteristics. The amulet's body is thin, with the left elbow hanging lower than the right, and the back is rounded. This pattern is evident in all three molds. The back can be inscribed with characters, or without.
The amulet you see here is the most beautiful large-sized Phra Pidta Luang Pu Khai amulet I've ever seen. It's a perfectly lacquered and gilded amulet. The old gold plating shows traces of touching, but only slightly above the height. The amulet is deeply imprinted, with all mold flaws clearly visible and intact. The wings on the sides are left just the right size, not too large. Overall, it's not too large, making it the most beautiful large-sized Phra Pidta Luang Pu Khai amulet in the amulet world today.

ประวัติโดยคร่าว ๆ วัดเชิงเลน หรือปัจจุบันเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็นวัดบพิตรพิมุขจักรวรรดิ์ กรุงเทพฯ เป็นวัดโบราณ มีมาตั้งแต่สมัยอยุธยา ต่อมา "กรมพระราชวังบวรสถานพิมุข" ได้สถาปนาขึ้นมาใหม่ และต่อมาเมื่อถึงรัชกาลที่ 3 ได้ทรงโปรดปฏิสังขรณ์อีกครั้ง หลวงปู่ไข่ หนึ่งในห้าของอาจารย์ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ของภาคตะวันออก ซึ่งเป็นศิษย์ของหลวงปู่จีน วัดท่าลาดเหนือ จ.ฉะเชิงเทรา หลวงปู่ไข่ได้สร้างพระปิดตาเช่นเดียวกันกับพระอาจารย์ แต่พระปิดตาของหลวงปู่ไข่กลับมา โด่งดังที่กรุงเทพฯ และบริเวณแถบภาคกลาง หลวงปู่ไข่เป็นชาวแปดริ้วโดยกำเนิด ท่านเกิดเมื่อวันที่ 7 มิถุนายน 2400 ณ บ้านประตูน้ำท่าไข่ อ.เมือง จ.ฉะเชิงเทรา เมื่อท่านอายุครบบวชท่านก็ได้อุปสมบท และร่ำเรียนพระธรรมวินัยอยู่ระยะหนึ่ง จากนั้น ท่านก็ไปฝากตัวเป็นศิษย์อยู่กับหลวงปู่จีนที่วัดท่าลาดเหนือ จ.ฉะเชิงเทรา ทั้งนี้ก็เพราะหลวงปู่ไข่ท่านชอบทางไสยเวท และเมื่อมาอยู่กับหลวงปู่จีนซึ่งท่านจะเชี่ยวชาญและเป็นผู้เรืองวิทยาคมทางด้านนี้โดยเฉพาะ หลวงปู่ไข่ท่านตั้งใจศึกษาหาความรู้จนเชี่ยวชาญ ภายหลังท่านก็อำลาพระอาจารย์ออกธุดงค์ สู่ป่าเขาลำเนาไพร แสวงหาวิชาอาคมเพิ่มเติมเรื่อยไป เมื่อถึง พ.ศ. 2445 ท่านได้มุ่งสู่เมืองหลวง และได้จำพรรษาอยู่ ณ "วัด เชิงเลน" เพียงแค่ 7-8 ปีเท่านั้น กุฏิหลวงปู่ไข่ ก็เนืองแน่นไปด้วยผู้คนที่เลื่อมใสและศรัทธา จนถึง พ.ศ. 2460 วัตถุมงคลของหลวงปู่ไข่ก็ได้เริ่มออกสู่สายตาบ้าง แต่ก็ไม่มาก คือท่านจะถือหลักไว้ว่า "หมดแล้วทำใหม่"
หลวงปู่ไข่ได้สร้างพระปิดตา เนื้อผงคลุกรัก เนื้อจะออกสีเหลืองแก่ หรือสีน้ำตาล โดยจะลงรักปิดทอง หรือลงรักน้ำเกลี้ยง ลงยางไม้ก็มี ส่วนพุทธคุณจะเน้นไปทางเมตตามหานิยม แคล้วคลาด คงกะพัน ดุจเช่นเดียวกันกับพระปิดตาหลวงพ่อแก้ว วัดเครือวัลย์ เลยทีเดียว
หลวงปู่ไข่ได้สร้างพระปิดตาไว้น้อยมากโดยแบ่งเป็น 3 ขนาด จากตัวองค์พระไม่รวมขอบข้าง คือ พิมพ์ใหญ่, พิมพ์กลาง, พิมพ์เล็ก แต่ในวงการจะไม่เรียกตามขนาดสักเท่าไร เพราะพระบางองค์ องค์พระเล็กนิดเดียว แต่ปีกใหญ่ก็มี จึงเรียกรวม ๆ กันว่าพระปิดตาหลวงปู่ไข่ แต่สำหรับพระปิดตาหลวงปู่ไข่พิมพ์ใหญ่เราสามารถแยกออกได้ คือ ขนาดตัวองค์พระอยู่ราว ๆ 2.3-2.4 ซม. หน้าตัก 1.5-1.6 ซม. ส่วนตำหนิที่สำคัญของพิมพ์ใหญ่ก็คือใต้ข้อศอกซ้ายจะมีเนื้อเกินเป็นก้อนกลม ๆ อยู่ 1 ก้อน ซึ่งพิมพ์กลางและพิมพ์เล็กจะไม่มี พระปิดตาหลวงปู่ไข่ทั้งพิมพ์ใหญ่, กลาง, เล็ก ทุกพิมพ์ ช่างที่แกะแม่พิมพ์จะทิ้งเอกลักษณ์ไว้เช่น จะแกะแม่พิมพ์ ลักษณะตัวองค์พระจะผอม ๆ ข้อศอกซ้ายจะห้อยต่ำลงกว่าข้างขวา ด้านหลังอูม เป็นแบบนี้ทั้ง 3 พิมพ์ ส่วนด้านหลังมีทั้งจารอักขระ และไม่มีจารก็มี
ส่วนองค์ที่ท่านเห็นอยู่นี้เป็นพระปิดตาหลวงปู่ไข่ พิมพ์ใหญ่ ที่สวยที่สุดตั้งแต่ผู้เขียนเคยเห็นมาเลย เป็นพระปิดตาที่ลงรักปิดทองที่สวยสมบูรณ์มาก ๆ ทองเก่าที่ปิดมีร่องรอยถูกสัมผัส ส่วนที่สูงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้น ตัวองค์พระกดพิมพ์ติดลึกสุด ๆ ตำหนิพิมพ์ต่าง ๆ ติดชัดเจนครบถ้วนทุกจุด ปีกด้านข้างก็เหลือไว้พอดี ๆ ไม่ใหญ่โตเกินไป ขนาดโดยรวมถือว่าไม่ใหญ่เกินไป จัดเป็นพระ ปิดตาหลวงปู่ไข่พิมพ์ใหญ่ที่สวยที่สุดในวงการพระเครื่องในปัจจุบันนี้เลยทีเดียว
